Access to Learning Fund (ALF)

Additional Fee Support Scheme (AFSS)

As part of an Access to Learning Fund application, the University could help low-income part-time undergraduates who have received a maximum statutory tuition fee grant (from the government) that does not meet the full tuition fee. The University also has discretion to consider other part-time undergraduates for additional fee support.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible to apply for an AFSS award you must be:

  • A Home or EU part-time undergraduate student who has been awarded a part-time fee grant
  • Registered for academic year 2011-12 on a part-time course and
  • Studying at least 60 credits on your course

Discretionary Support

If you are not eligible for a statutory fee grant because of a previous degree you may apply for an AFSS award if you meet the following criteria:

  • A period of not less than 5 years has elapsed since your previous degree was awarded and
  • Your present course is in a subject area that is different from your previous degree and
  • Your household income is either means tested benefits or a gross annual income below £11,000 per year

How do I apply?

If you are a ‘home’ student you should complete the part-time application form for the Access to Learning Fund.
If you are an EU student, you should request an AFSS application form from a Student Life Advice Desk

When you apply you must:

  • Complete all sections of the application form
  • Attach a copy of your notification of award showing your tuition fee grant or
  • Attach evidence of your previous degree subject and date awarded, and evidence of your gross household income

Awards

  • Students in receipt of a full statutory fee grant will receive an award to cover the difference between the actual tuition fee and the fee grant
  • Students who meet the discretionary criteria will receive 50% of their tuition fee up to a maximum of £600

When will I get a decision?

We aim to give you a decision in writing within 4 weeks of receiving your application. However, if you fail to attach the relevant document(s), you may have to wait longer.

How will my fees be paid?

If you are eligible for an AFSS fee grant, the money will be paid direct to the University of Salford.
