Counselling
What is Counselling?
Counselling is a talking therapy that takes place in a safe, trusting non-judgemental environment. Everything that occurs within a counselling session, except in the most exceptional of circumstances, is kept completely confidential and information is not shared with any other services. The primary aim of the counsellor is to help the client to help themselves on their personal journey to understanding their issues. Counselling is not advice giving, it does not offer guidance and it doesn’t offer solutions.
If you are looking for advice over a particular issue that is personally affecting you then we recommend that you see a wellbeing advisor instead.
How do I facilitate Counselling?
If you are sure that counselling is the correct service for you then simply fill in a counselling referral form. This can be done online, at the advice desk in University House, or we can send you a referral form by post if this is easier (please phone 0161 295 7008 in order to facilitate this). Once we have received your referral form we will contact you within two working days. You will be offered a maximum of 6 sessions with one of our counsellors and we have availability throughout the week.
Terms and Conditions
Making the decision to participate in counselling is a brave and proactive choice. It does however require a firm commitment to arrive on time, engage and attend the agreed number of sessions. Should you need to cancel we require at least 24 hours notice where possible by calling us on 0161 295 7008. In a limited number of cases we may be able to rearrange for you to see your counsellor at a different point in the week. Please leave a voice message if you cannot get through to the coordinator.
Counselling is a valuable resource open to the whole of the student population; therefore demand for the service is very high. In light of this we ask you to respect our efforts to provide this service to all students at Salford. If you’re unable to make your session then your next appointment will automatically be the following week at the same time however we cannot guarantee that we will be able to facilitate the full 6 sessions as agreed initially.
Either party reserves the right to cancel counselling sessions at any time, however if you fail to attend or inform us of your non attendance then we reserve the right to end your counselling sessions.
