The Home Office defines a hate crime as any incident, which constitutes a criminal offence, which is perceived by the victim or any other person as being motivated by prejudice or hate.
Hatred is a strong term that goes beyond simply causing offence or hostility. A hate crime is any criminal offence committed against a person or property that is motivated by an offender's hatred of someone because of their:
- Race, colour, ethnic origin, nationality or nations origins
- Religion
- Gender or gender identity
- Sexual orientation
- Disability
A hate crime can take many forms including:
Physical attacks - such as physical assault, damage to property, offensive graffiti, neighbour disputes and arson
Threat of attack - including offensive letters, abusive or obscene telephone calls, groups hanging around to intimidate you and your family and unfounded, malicious complaints.
Verbal abuse or insults - offensive leaflets and posters, abusive gestures, dumping of rubbish outside homes or through letterboxes, and bullying at school or in the workplace.
The University of Salford, working in partnership with Greater Manchester Police and the Salford Partnership, is a Hate Crime reporting centre. As such you can report a hate crime and find support if you have been a victim or a witness to a hate crime.
Who can report a hate crime?
You can report a hate crime if you have been a victim of a hate crime or have witnessed a hate crime. You can use a Third Party Reporting Form to report a crime even if you are a witness or know of a crime that has taken place. Reporting can be done anonymously or you can give as much personal information as you feel comfortable to give.
You can either choose to have the Police contact you to follow up or you may decide to remain anonymous. Even if you wish to remain anonymous, any information you give can help the Police to identify ‘hot spots’ and stop further hate-related activity from taking place. Every report helps to eradicate hate crime.
Where can you report a hate crime?
- Security in Maxwell Building (open 24 hours at main reception)
- Student Life
- Any School Main Office - please ask to talk to the Equality and Diversity Co-ordinator
- Accommodation sites
- Libraries (Clifford Whitworth, Allerton, Adelphi)
- Students’ Union
If you wish to speak about a Hate Crime in confidence, or have questions, please contact a member of the Hate Crime Support Team. Your decision to remain anonymous will be fully respected and any information you give is strictly confidential.
